Prepare the physical reference

Start with the sample ID, intended face and length direction. Place the cutting in a useful flat condition for the observation and record any relevant state or preparation. Keep the ruler and the area to be measured accessible. If you only have a photograph, check whether its identity and ruler evidence are clear enough for the discussion. When the evidence is insufficient, leave the dimension open and ask for a physical sample or a clearer measurement record.

Define the complete unit

Identify a feature that returns to the same position in the repeating arrangement. Describe the starting and ending points rather than measuring an arbitrary attractive stripe. The visible band may not be the complete construction repeat, particularly when the junction is unclear. Keep that ambiguity as a question for the textile team. A sketch can mark your endpoints as a measurement aid, with no implication that it is a verified production weave diagram.

Measure the directions separately

Record across-width and along-length observations as separate fields. Keep the sample orientation visible so the reader knows which direction each value describes. Where the actual warp and weft information is confirmed, retain it with the article record. State units explicitly. If you measure several complete units together, record the whole distance and unit count used for the calculation, with endpoints and method retained. Do not silently use a partial feature as a full unit.

Photograph the evidence

Keep the ruler in the relevant plane and take a clear view of the selected endpoints. A perspective image can distort the appearance of distances, so retain the actual physical measurement alongside the photograph. Include an overview showing the sample identity and direction when a close ruler crop would lose context. The observation board accepts manual values; it does not calibrate a picture or recognise the pattern automatically. Screen zoom remains a viewing aid.

Record status and discrepancies

Label your measurements as buyer observations until the relevant article information is checked. Keep the physical ID, method, date or project revision and any confirmation source. If repeated observations or supplied information differ, record the difference and ask for clarification rather than choosing a convenient value. Blank repeat fields remain unmeasured. The goal is a traceable record that can support a layout discussion, not a laboratory method or article approval created by a web form.

Use the value with the garment

Give the sample maker the applicable repeat, usable width, actual pattern shapes and directional constraints. State which seam or detail needs alignment. A dimension on its own does not guarantee continuity at every garment join. Keep layout assumptions and the result of any trial beside the measurement record. If the proposed article changes, request its own dimensions and review the relevant pattern and trial rather than reusing a value from a similar-looking sample.

Keep an overview with a close measurement

A close ruler photograph may lose the sample identity or direction. Retain an overview or linked record that supplies that context. The measurement becomes easier to discuss when another person can connect the endpoints to the actual cutting rather than interpret an isolated number or cropped image.

Questions for this step

Can I calculate repeat from a ruler-free photograph?

Use it for appearance discussion. The site does not infer millimetres from image pixels or displayed size.

What if the full unit is unclear?

Describe the feature you measured, keep its endpoints and ask the team to confirm the complete repeat for the article.

Can a manual measurement be used as a final article specification?

Keep its evidence and confirmation status. The relevant article information and agreement are needed before treating a buyer observation as a final specification.
